Description
3M EC-1751 Scotch-Weld Epoxy Adhesive
Batch 5012J
3M EC-1751 Scotch-Weld Epoxy Adhesive is a two-part, aluminum-filled, room-temperature curing structural adhesive engineered for high-performance bonding in demanding aerospace, military, and industrial applications. It is characterized by its thick, mastic (paste-like) consistency, making it ideal for void-filling, repairing holes, dents, and cracks in metal. This adhesive cures to form a strong, rigid, and durable bond that provides excellent shear and peel strength, along with superior resistance to environmental stressors such as temperature extremes, moisture, salt spray, and various aviation fluids. Its formulation allows for a 45-minute work life, providing ample time for precise positioning of parts before the curing process leads to handling strength within 8-12 hours and full cure in 7 days at room temperature.
Key Characteristics:
Two-Part Epoxy System: Consists of a base (often gray) and an accelerator (often amber), which are mixed together prior to application to initiate the chemical curing process.
Aluminum-Filled: Contains aluminum particles, contributing to its gray color, high density, and excellent adhesion properties, particularly to metals.
Thick Paste / Mastic Consistency: Ideal for void filling, sag-resistance on vertical or overhead surfaces, and repairing irregularities in substrates. Can be applied with a spatula, trowel, or extrusion equipment.
Room Temperature Cure: Cures effectively at ambient temperatures (e.g., 75°F / 24°C), eliminating the need for heat curing in many applications. Heat can accelerate the cure.
High Strength: Develops excellent shear strength (e.g., 2000 psi to 2400 psi on various metals at room temperature) and good peel strength, providing robust structural bonds.
Excellent Adhesion: Forms strong, durable bonds to a wide range of aerospace substrates, including various metals (aluminum, steel, copper, titanium), composites, and engineering plastics.
Void-Filling Properties: Its dense, high-viscosity formula is excellent for filling gaps, holes, and dents with negligible shrinkage.
Durable & Environmental Resistance: Maintains bond integrity under extreme conditions, including wide temperature fluctuations (typically -67°F to 180°F / -55°C to 82°C continuous, with higher intermittent), humidity, salt spray, and immersion in water or aviation fluids.
Good Work Life: Offers a typical work life of 45 minutes, allowing sufficient time for application and precise component alignment.
Machinable: The cured adhesive can often be machined or sanded, allowing for a smooth finish after repair.
Structural Bonding: Used for bonding various metal components in airframes, control surfaces, fuselage structures, and other primary and secondary aircraft structures.
Metal Repair: Ideal for repairing dents, cracks, holes, and surface imperfections on metal parts, castings, and sheet metal panels.
Void Filling: Employed to fill voids and gaps in structural components or assemblies to maintain integrity and prevent stress concentrations.
Replacement for Mechanical Fasteners: Can be used in certain applications to replace or augment mechanical fasteners like screws, rivets, or spot welds, contributing to weight savings and aerodynamic smoothness.
Bonding Dissimilar Materials: Effective for bonding various aerospace materials, including metals to composites or plastics, where structural integrity is required.
Aircraft and Missile Maintenance: A go-to adhesive for general and structural repairs in military and commercial aviation, including fixed-wing aircraft and rotary-wing aircraft, and missile systems.
Engine Compartment Repairs: Suitable for use in areas that experience higher temperatures due to its thermal resistance.
