Flamemaster CS-3808 Class A1/2 Silicone Sealant (BMS-8-68)
Flamemaster CS-3808 Class A Silicone Sealant is a two-part, chemically cured, room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone compound specifically designed for demanding aerospace, missile, and electronic applications. This sealant is engineered to provide an exceptional combination of high-temperature performance, long-term stability, and ease of application. The "Class A" designation typically refers to a brushable or flowable consistency, making it suitable for thin coatings, potting, or applications where the sealant needs to spread or self-level. Upon curing, CS-3808 forms a flexible and resilient rubber that exhibits excellent thermal stability, electrical properties, and resistance to sponging and reversion over a wide temperature range, along with good adhesion to a variety of surfaces, often with the use of a primer.
Key Features for Aviation:
- Two-Part System: Consists of a base compound and a curing agent, mixed just prior to application.
- Silicone RTV Chemistry: Provides inherent high-temperature stability, flexibility, and good electrical insulating properties.
- Rapid Room Temperature Cure: Cures effectively at ambient temperatures, allowing for quicker processing and handling.
- High Temperature Performance: Designed to withstand extreme temperatures, often operating effectively from very low (e.g., -65°F / -54°C) to very high temperatures (e.g., up to 475°F / 246°C continuous, with intermittent exposure to higher).
- Excellent Stability: Resists degradation, sponging, and reversion (returning to a liquid state) over time and temperature cycling.
- Good Electrical Properties: Possesses high dielectric strength and good volume resistivity, making it suitable for electrical insulation applications.
- Permanent Adhesion: Forms durable bonds to a wide range of substrates, including metals (aluminum, steel) and often requires a primer (e.g., CS9903) for optimal adhesion.
- Fluid Resistance: Offers good resistance to distilled water, salt water, hydraulic fluids (like Skydrol), and jet fuel, making it suitable for aerospace environments.
- Class A Consistency: Brushable or pourable, ideal for thin coatings, conformal coatings, or applications where flowability is desired.
- Versatile: Can be modified to achieve a range of consistencies and cure properties while retaining core performance.
Typical Aviation Applications:
- Insulating Coating and Thermal Barrier: Used as an insulating coating or thermal barrier material on aircraft and missile components where heat transfer needs to be retarded, protecting sensitive parts from high temperatures.
- Electrical Encapsulation and Potting: Ideal for encapsulating and potting electrical components, connectors, and wiring harnesses to protect them from moisture, vibration, thermal cycling, and environmental contaminants.
- Sealing Applications in High-Temperature Zones: Used for sealing joints, seams, and fasteners in areas of the aircraft that experience elevated temperatures, such as engine compartments or near exhaust systems.
- Gasketing: Can form flexible, high-temperature resistant gaskets for various assemblies.
- Missile and Electronic Applications: Its robust performance characteristics extend its use beyond aircraft to missile and other advanced electronic systems requiring high reliability.
- Corrosion Protection: Provides a barrier against corrosive elements, extending the life of components.
