Flamemaster CS-9903 Primer (MIL-P-47215 / MMS-K328)
Flamemaster CS-9903 Primer is a single-component, solvent-based adhesion promoter specifically engineered to enhance the bond strength and durability of various silicone-based sealants and coatings, particularly Flamemaster CS-3808. It is designed to chemically modify the substrate surface, creating an optimal interface for the silicone to adhere to, especially on difficult-to-bond materials. This primer is a crucial step in achieving a reliable and long-lasting seal in demanding aerospace, missile, and electronic applications where high performance and environmental resistance are paramount. It is typically applied as a thin, uniform coat and allowed to dry before the application of the silicone sealant.
Key Features for Aviation:
- Single-Component: Ready to use directly from the container, requiring no mixing.
Solvent-Based: Contains volatile solvents that evaporate after application, leaving behind the active adhesion-promoting agents.
- Adhesion Promoter: Specifically formulated to significantly improve the adhesion of silicone sealants (such as Flamemaster CS-3808) to various substrates.
- Versatile Substrate Compatibility: Effective on a wide range of materials commonly found in aerospace, including metals (aluminum, stainless steel, titanium), glass, and some plastics.
- Enhanced Durability: Improves the overall durability and environmental resistance of the silicone bond, particularly against moisture, temperature cycling, and fluid exposure.
- Fast Drying: Typically dries quickly, allowing for efficient processing and subsequent sealant application.
- Transparent/Clear: Usually appears colorless or slightly translucent, minimizing visual impact on the substrate.
- Essential for Optimal Performance: For many silicone aerospace applications, a primer like CS-9903 is critical to achieve the specified bond strength and long-term performance.
Typical Aviation Applications:
- Preparation for Silicone Sealant Application: The primary use is to prepare surfaces before applying silicone sealants like Flamemaster CS-3808. This ensures maximum adhesion and prevents delamination, particularly in:
- High-Temperature Sealing: Critical for sealing joints and components in engine bays, exhaust areas, or other hot zones where CS-3808 is used.
- Electrical Potting and Encapsulation: Enhances adhesion when potting or encapsulating sensitive electronic components and wiring with silicone for protection against moisture, vibration, and thermal stress.
- Environmental Sealing: Improves the bond of silicone seals on access panels, fairings, and other aircraft structures exposed to environmental elements.
- Bonding to Difficult Substrates: Particularly important when bonding silicone to typically challenging surfaces like certain metals (e.g., anodized aluminum, stainless steel) or glass.
- Repair and Overhaul: Used during MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) activities to ensure new silicone sealant applications achieve optimal bond strength on previously exposed or repaired surfaces.
- Missile and Electronic Assembly: Crucial for ensuring the integrity of silicone bonds in missile systems and other high-performance electronic assemblies.
