IPG 6120 Polyester High Temperature Masking Tape
Interchangeable with 3M Polyester Tape 8991
IPG 6120 Polyester High Temperature Masking Tape is a specialized blue polyester (PET) film tape featuring a high-performance silicone adhesive. The technical data sheet highlights its ability to perform in demanding masking operations where durable coatings, such as powder coatings, are applied. The combination of its flexible PET backing and silicone adhesive provides excellent conformability, solvent and chemical resistance, and ensures a clean, residue-free removal. It's designed to withstand continuous temperatures up to 356°F (180°C), making it a reliable solution for high-temperature applications where a smooth, thin backing is required to achieve clean, crisp paint lines.
Key Characteristics:
- Polyester (PET) Film Backing: A thin, strong, and highly flexible blue backing that resists tearing and conforms well to irregular surfaces and contours. Its smooth surface ensures clean paint lines.
- Silicone Adhesive: This type of adhesive provides superior high-temperature resistance and adhesion to a variety of surfaces. It is known for its ability to remove cleanly without leaving residue, even after extended exposure to heat.
- High Temperature Resistance: The tape is rated for continuous use at temperatures up to 356°F (180°C), making it suitable for powder coating and other high-temperature finishing processes.
- Excellent Chemical and Solvent Resistance: The PET backing is inherently resistant to a wide range of chemicals and solvents, protecting the masked surface from degradation.
- Clean, Residue-Free Removal: A critical feature for aerospace applications, ensuring the tape peels away in one piece without leaving any adhesive behind, which minimizes rework.
- High Dielectric Strength: Although primarily used for masking, its polyester backing provides good electrical insulation properties, which is a common characteristic of such tapes.
- Moisture Resistance: The backing and adhesive are formulated to resist moisture, ensuring the tape remains effective in damp conditions or during certain cleaning processes.
Application in Aviation:
- Powder Coating Masking: It is an ideal tape for masking parts prior to powder coating, a common finishing method for aerospace components. The tape withstands the high temperatures of the powder curing oven, and its clean removal ensures the finished part is pristine.
- Autoclave Flash Tape: Its ability to withstand high temperatures and remove cleanly makes it suitable for use as an autoclave flash tape in metal bonding and composites fabrication. It is used to hold layers of material together during the curing process.
- Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Protection: In avionics manufacturing, the tape can be used to protect certain components on printed circuit boards during a variety of processes, including conformal coating or soldering, where high temperatures are involved.
- General High-Temperature Masking: It is used for masking parts that will be exposed to heat lamps or paint bake cycles during repair and touch-up work. The tape's conformability allows it to be used on complex shapes found on aircraft components.
