IPG OM (Orange Mask) High Temp Premium Grade Paper Masking Tape
Interchangeable with 3M High Performance Green Masking Tape 401
OM (Orange Mask) High Temp Premium Grade Paper Masking Tape is a high-performance, orange-colored masking tape featuring a smooth, high-quality crepe paper backing and a natural rubber adhesive. It is specifically engineered for demanding painting and finishing applications that involve high-temperature bake cycles. Orange Mask provides excellent adhesion, superior conformability to irregular surfaces, and sharp, clean paint lines, without allowing paint bleed-through. A key benefit is its ability to remove cleanly and in one piece, leaving no residue or surface staining, even after exposure to elevated temperatures (typically up to 250°F / 121°C for 30 minutes, with some variants handling higher for shorter durations) and resistance to UV for up to 72 hours. Its robust design makes it ideal for critical masking tasks where precision and clean removal are paramount.
Key Characteristics:
- Orange Color: Distinctive orange color provides high visibility for accurate placement and easy identification of masked areas.
- High Temperature Resistance: Designed to withstand elevated temperatures, generally up to 250°F (121°C) for 30 minutes, suitable for many paint bake cycles.
- Some variations may tolerate higher temperatures for shorter periods.
- Premium Crepe Paper Backing: Smooth, fine crepe paper offers excellent conformability to curves, contours, and irregular surfaces, along with high tear resistance.
- Natural Rubber Adhesive: Provides strong initial tack, secure adhesion to various substrates (painted surfaces, bare metals, plastics), and ensures clean, residue-free removal.
- Sharp Paint Lines: Prevents paint bleed-through, ensuring crisp, well-defined edges for professional finishes.
- Wet Sanding and Solvent Resistance: The tape is often resistant to moisture and solvents, making it suitable for wet sanding and compatible with both solvent-based and waterborne paint systems.
- UV Resistance: Offers UV resistance typically up to 72 hours, providing flexibility for applications that might involve temporary outdoor exposure.
- Clean, One-Piece Removal: A critical feature, ensuring the tape peels away without tearing, slivering, or leaving adhesive residue behind, reducing rework.
- Controlled Unwind: Designed for smooth and consistent unwinding from the roll, improving application efficiency and reducing user fatigue.
Application in Aviation:
- Aircraft Painting and Repainting: Essential for masking off critical areas such as windows, landing gear components, engine inlets, control surfaces, and intricate livery designs during the application of primers, basecoats, and topcoats, especially those requiring high-temperature bake cycles.
- Component Finishing: Utilized in workshops for masking individual aircraft components (e.g., panels, brackets, fairings) before painting, powder coating, or other surface treatments that involve elevated temperatures.
- Precision Stenciling: Ensures extremely sharp lines for stenciled markings, national insignia, warning labels, and aircraft registration numbers, even with multiple coats and subsequent heat curing.
- Composite Manufacturing and Repair: Can be used in composite fabrication processes for masking areas during lay-up, bonding, or sanding, particularly if the process involves moderate heat.
- Repair and Touch-Up: Crucial for precise masking during localized paint repairs or touch-ups on the airframe or components that might involve heat lamps or small bake ovens.
