IPG PG21 High Temp Premium Paper Masking Tape - ASTM D6123/D6123M (1), CID AA-883B (1), BAC5317
Interchangeable with 3M Performance Masking Tape 2380
IPG PG21 High Temp Premium Paper Masking Tape is a state-of-the-art, professional-grade masking solution engineered for precision and reliability in extreme heat applications. Featuring a robust, smooth, and highly conformable paper backing combined with a specially formulated, high-temperature resistant adhesive, this tape delivers razor-sharp paint lines without bleed-through. It is designed to withstand demanding paint bake cycles up to 325°F (163°C) for 30 minutes, and offers impeccable, residue-free, one-piece removal even after prolonged exposure to heat. Its consistent performance, strong adhesion, and clean release make IPG PG21 an indispensable tool for critical masking tasks where achieving a pristine finish in elevated temperatures is essential.
Key Characteristics:
- Exceptional High-Temperature Performance: Specifically designed to endure and perform reliably in high-temperature paint cure cycles, capable of withstanding up to 325°F (163°C) for 30 minutes. This prevents adhesive breakdown, residue transfer, or scorching during demanding bake cycles.
- Premium Paper Backing: Utilizes a highly refined, smooth crepe paper that offers superior conformability to complex curves, contours, and irregular surfaces. Its strength resists tearing during application and removal.
- Advanced High-Temp Adhesive: Features a specially engineered synthetic rubber or acrylic adhesive that provides excellent initial tack, maintains secure and consistent adhesion throughout the bake cycle, and ensures ultra-clean, residue-free removal without ghosting or surface damage.
- Precision Masking for Sharp Lines: The tape's thin profile and adhesive formulation create a tight seal, effectively preventing paint bleed-under and ensuring consistently sharp, crisp paint edges.
- Resistant to Wet Sanding & Solvents: The backing and adhesive are formulated to resist moisture and common paint solvents, allowing for use in wet sanding processes and compatibility with both solvent-based and waterborne paint systems.
- Controlled, Smooth Unwind: Engineered for consistent and smooth unwinding from the roll, facilitating efficient and precise application without frustrating breaks or sticky residue on the sides of the roll.
- UV Resistance (Typical): Often provides good resistance to ultraviolet light for a limited period (e.g., 1-3 days), offering flexibility for projects that might involve some outdoor exposure before painting.
- One-Piece, Clean Removal: A critical performance attribute, ensuring the tape peels off in one piece without slivering, tearing, or leaving any adhesive residue, minimizing rework and surface preparation.
Application in Aviation:
- IPG PG21 High Temp Premium Paper Masking Tape is a vital consumable in the most demanding painting, finishing, and protective applications within aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations:
- Aircraft Exterior Painting with Bake Cycles: Indispensable for masking sensitive areas such as windows, sensors, landing gear cutouts, engine inlets, intricate livery designs, and composite panels before the aircraft enters large paint booths equipped with forced-air, high-temperature curing ovens.
- Engine Component & Nacelle Finishing: Applied for precise masking of jet engine components, nacelles, and other parts that undergo specialized painting, powder coating, or thermal spray processes requiring elevated temperatures.
- Complex Graphics & Stenciling: Facilitates the creation of extremely precise and intricate stenciled markings, national insignia, warning labels, and aircraft registration numbers, even with multiple paint layers and heat curing.
- Composite Fabrication & Curing: Utilized in advanced composite manufacturing processes for masking areas during lay-up, bonding, or sanding, particularly when high-temperature curing (e.g., in an autoclave or oven) is part of the process.
- Precision Repair & Touch-Up: Essential for highly accurate masking during localized paint repairs or touch-ups on the airframe or components where portable heat lamps or small bake ovens are utilized.
- Substrate Protection: Used to protect adjacent surfaces during chemical stripping processes (where compatible), sanding, or other abrasive operations on critical aerospace components.
