PPG Aerospace Mastinox CA 1000 Non-Chromate Corrosion Inhibitive Jointing Compound
PPG Mastinox CA 1000 is a high-performance, non-chromate corrosion inhibitive jointing compound designed for the protection of aircraft structures. As an eco-friendly alternative to traditional strontium chromate products, CA 1000 remains permanently flexible and chemically stable across a wide temperature range. It is specifically formulated to act as a barrier between dissimilar metals, preventing galvanic corrosion in joints, fasteners, and faying surfaces without the environmental or health hazards of heavy metals.
Key Benefits
- Non-Chromate Formula: Fully compliant with modern health and safety regulations (REACH compliant) while maintaining superior anti-corrosive properties.
- Permanent Flexibility: Does not harden or become brittle with age, allowing it to absorb the structural flex and thermal expansion/contraction of aircraft skins.
- Dissimilar Metal Protection: Creates a high-resistance barrier that prevents the electrochemical reactions (galvanic corrosion) typically found between aluminum and stainless steel or titanium fasteners.
- Excellent Fluid Resistance: Highly resistant to aviation fuels, hydraulic fluids (Skydrol), and water washout.
- Ease of Maintenance: Because it remains a non-curing paste, fasteners treated with CA 1000 can be easily removed and inspected without damaging the surrounding structure.
Applications
- Fastener Installation: Used for "wet-installing" rivets, bolts, and screws into airframe structures to seal out moisture.
- Faying Surfaces: Applied between overlapping metal skins or structural members to prevent intergranular corrosion.
- Dissimilar Metal Joints: Essential for interfaces where steel, titanium, or carbon fiber components meet aluminum structures.
- Removable Access Panels: Ideal for panels that require frequent removal but need a watertight, corrosion-proof seal.
The industry standard for "green" (non-chromated) jointing in modern aircraft production.
- Airbus: AIMS 04-05-005
- Textron Aviation: Part number CA1000 (standard for Beechcraft, Cessna, Hawker)
- Boeing: BMS 3-27 (Equivalent performance; often used as a non-chromate alternative)
- SAE International: Tested to AS5127 (Standard Test Methods for Sealants)
