PPG Aerospace PR-1440A1/2 AMS-S-8802 / MIL-S-8802 Type 2 Class A1/2 Fuel Tank Sealant
The PPG PR-1440 A-1/2 is an essential two-part, manganese dioxide-cured polysulfide sealant specifically engineered for demanding aerospace maintenance and repair operations (MRO). As a Type 2, Class A compound, it provides the requisite fluid-resistance and physical properties mandated by key military and commercial aerospace specifications. This material is formulated as a low-viscosity liquid (Class A), prioritizing high penetration and coverage over volume filling. Its Type 2 manganese dioxide cure system ensures a resilient, fuel-tight seal across a wide operational temperature range.
Aviation ApplicationThe PR-1440 Class A is the industry standard for specific high-integrity fuel tank sealing tasks:
- Fastener/Rivet Overcoating: Its low viscosity is ideal for brush-coating installed rivets and fasteners, ensuring full encapsulation to prevent micro-leaks and inhibit the onset of crevice corrosion at structural joints.
- Seam and Joint Application (Thin Film): Used to apply a thin film (up to $25 \text{ mils}$ thick) to seams or complex internal structures where fillet sealing is impractical.
- Corrosion Prevention: The manganese dioxide cure system offers inherent corrosion-inhibiting properties crucial for protecting metal surfaces in continuous contact with fuel. The ability to select from multiple work-life times (A-1/2, A-1, A-2) allows MRO professionals to optimize the sealing process for small, rapid spot repairs (A-1/2) or larger-scale tank maintenance (A-2).
