Description
RD-S Rhino Dirt Reseable Bags - 0.5 cu. ft each
Rhino Dirt is a specialized, dry, granular abrasive media used for various surface preparation and cleaning applications, particularly in industries where sensitive substrates or specific finishes are required. Unlike traditional sand or aggressive blasting media, Rhino Dirt is typically made from a softer, non-metallic, biodegradable material, such as crushed walnut shells or corn cob grit. This allows it to effectively remove contaminants like paint, carbon, grease, and corrosion without damaging the underlying surface, etching the material, or creating excessive dust. Its unique properties make it a preferred choice for cleaning delicate or critical components.
Key Characteristics:
- Soft Abrasive: Made from natural, softer materials (e.g., walnut shells, corn cob grit) that are less aggressive than mineral or metallic abrasives.
- Non-Damaging: Cleans surfaces effectively without causing etching, pitting, or deformation of the underlying material, making it ideal for delicate substrates.
- Biodegradable and Eco-Friendly: Composed of natural, renewable resources, making it an environmentally responsible choice for blasting and cleaning.
- Low Dust Generation: Produces significantly less airborne dust compared to conventional abrasive blasting media, improving worker visibility and air quality.
- Non-Silica: Does not contain free silica, eliminating the health risks associated with silicosis.
- Absorbent Properties: Can absorb oils, greases, and other liquids, contributing to a cleaner surface.
- Controlled Cleaning: Provides a gentle yet effective cleaning action, allowing for precise removal of coatings or contaminants.
- Reusable (Limited): Depending on the application and contamination levels, it can sometimes be collected and reused, contributing to cost efficiency.
Application in Aviation:
- Engine Component Cleaning: Used for cleaning carbon deposits, grease, and other residues from precision engine parts, turbine blades, cylinder heads, pistons, and manifolds during overhaul. This is crucial as aggressive cleaning could alter tolerances or damage critical surfaces.
- Aircraft Wheel Cleaning: Effective for cleaning and degreasing aircraft wheels, removing brake dust, dirt, and other contaminants without harming the wheel's finish or structural integrity.
- Paint and Coating Removal: Used for stripping old paint, primers, or light coatings from aircraft skins, composite parts, or delicate components where chemical strippers are undesirable or traditional sandblasting is too aggressive.
- Corrosion Removal (Light): For removing light corrosion or oxidation from aluminum, magnesium, and other sensitive alloys without pitting the surface.
- Cleaning of Composite Structures: Can be used to clean certain composite parts without damaging the resin or fiber matrix.
- Restoration of Sensitive Equipment: Ideal for cleaning delicate equipment, electronics, or instruments where precise cleaning without abrasion is necessary. This method is commonly referred to as "soft media blasting" or "dry abrasive blasting with organic media" and is a critical part of numerous aircraft maintenance procedures to preserve component life and airworthiness.
